Samsung F300 – Flawed faces

Samsung has created a ripple in the market with its dual-sided Samsung F300. The handset presents itself as the combination of a music player and standard phone, and comes packaged in a slim, compact shape, so that it can be easily carried as well. A nice try indeed, but what Samsung F300 fails to do, is to score a high marks in usability as well. Thus, while the innovation makes an impression, the lack of user friendliness blurs its reputation. The side of the Samsung F300 that features a standard functionalities of a phone, is full of flaws. The keys are small and for fat fingers sure poses problems. But even smaller is the screen.

The display can only show up to 3 lines of text. While this may sound okay to cater to the basic requirements like SMS etc, accessing advance features (like web browsing) become problematic. In this case the only way out is to turn to the other side, with larger and better screen. This side of phone that is modelled on the platform of a iPod Nano, includes a bright display, making viewing a delight. This problem of constant flipping makes the users feel quite irritating, thereby making usability almost nill.

The Menu system of Samsung F300 is also a mess. The entries are badly labelled and is difficult to find things. For example, video is found under the category of Albums. Another area of concern is its battery life. The battery is anemic, and offers only two hours of talk time. Samsung supplies the phone with a case that incorporates a second battery, but this seriously bulks up the handset. One really does not find anything to recommend in the phone – the Samsung F300. If you are looking for a good music phone, you might as well choose Sony Ericsson. And trust me, you wont miss the Samsung F300

Nokia 8600 – mesmerizing beauty

Heard about phone with a heartbeat? If not yet, then its time to check out the new ultra high-end fashion phone from Nokia – the Nokia 8600 (a.k.a. Luna). The handset takes some inspiration from the Nokia 8800 model, but loses some of the stainless steel charm, with a smoked glass. And here is where the magic is. When the smooth action slider is closed, the keypad is secured behind dark, semi-opaque glass where it softly pulsates in what Nokia describes as a heartbeat. Nokia 8600 has a comfortable size. It measures 107mm x 45mm x 16mm (4.2" x 1.8" x .6") and weighs a solid 143g (5oz). Its display QVGA (240x320 pixel) display can generate 16 million different colours, adding great life to texts, pictures and graphics.

The colour combination of the handset marries well with the contours, and subtle illuminating effects. Nokia 8600 is quite rich in terms of features as well. The handset is a quad-band product. Thus, in terms of connectivity, it offers the best. It runs on Nokia's S40 user interface, offering easy-to-use, and easy-to-understand Menu system. For exchange of data, the Nokia 8600 offers the advantage of GPRS/ EDGE and Bluetooth. One of the noteworthy change in Nokia 8600 is that, it is the first handset of Nokia that make use of the new micro-USB connector. This new connector, which is also used by Motorola's RAZR line2, allows for both data and charging tasks.

The device features a 2 MP camera, with a competency to record 176x144 pixel video clips. And for beats and thrill, the device comes with a competent music player that supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ media files. But there appears to be no media card slot, as has been the case with the other 8000 series fashion phones.Overall, the Nokia 8600 is a highly attractive device. It is surely a bit expensive, but if looks matter the most to you, then this handset would not make you feel regret about the high premium payed.
